For Colored Girls is a series of poems about colored women living and surviving. Each poem tells a new story and each story paints a picture of another woman living another life. Each poem is about hope and finding yourself; realizing your worth and owning it.I would recommend For Colored Girls to any woman or fan of women's literature. There is some swearing and some adult situations, but I feel it is suitable for mature teens.As I read For Color Girls, I got pulled into a roller coaster of emotions. One moment, I was laughing and the next I was sad or angry. The poems between the covers really do cover a range of challenges women of all walks face. My heart broke for each girl and I closed my Kindle with tears in my eyes for the raw emotions and the sheer amount of heartache each poem portrayed. I loved each and every word and felt a connection with each and every girl. I can't wait to take what I read and put it to use when I raise my sons and my daughters and influence my nieces and my nephews.
This play/poetry collection—or “choreopoem,†the term used for this type of drama—will hit you right in the gut. A group of five African-American women express their struggles, heartaches, and moments of joy. This book is intense and memorable, and something I can see myself picking up for a reread.
My absolute fave is Their Eyes Were Watching God, but this book here has been the one I re-read and turn to for fortification every time I find myself needing to reinforce my resolve, determination and strength in life. This is such a moving, stirring, motivating, thought-provoking and well-written piece of art. My mom gave me her copy years ago and I in turn gifted it to one of my good friends who was going through a very difficult time which is why I was in need of another copy. I ordered this used copy from the seller because of the great reviews and am happy I did. My book looks almost new and arrived on time.
This book changed my life. I LOVE the film, so was very keen on reading the book. Now that I have I see why it was so powerful that it had to be put in film (to catch more readers!). The book is just THAT good, I am buying it as gifts for my friends and family this year for the holiday season.I think any woman could relate to the poetry in this book. It is about what we all go through, and I could identify with every single woman represented by every color. Just amazing, that is all that I can say. Definitely a great read, and I read it in one day. If you are on the fence, you have to buy this book - you will not be disappointed.
I read the book some time ago. I couldn't find my copy so I purchased another copy. This one I will keep and not loan out.
Where do I begin?! This is an amazing screenplay/book. Read in one sitting but I reference it all the time. Everyone should submerge themselves in this work of art.
